Bank and financial dividend stocks
Banks, insurers, asset managers and other financial companies are among the biggest dividend payers in the US market. Large US banks' dividends are reviewed against the Federal Reserve's annual stress tests, and many announce increases after the results each summer. Smaller regional and community banks often pay steady dividends too.
How this list is built: US-listed stocks in the Financial Services sector in our data with a yield of 2% to 12% and a share price of at least $5. The payout ratio must be 100% of earnings or less; where the dividend history allows, dividends paid over the last 12 months must be no more than 5% below the 12 months before, and high payers (8% or more) whose share price fell 10% or more over the past year are left out. Highest yield first. Refreshed daily from our dividend data.

What drives bank dividends
Banks earn the difference between what they pay on deposits and what they earn on loans and investments, plus fees. Strong capital levels and steady earnings support the dividend; rising loan losses or falling capital can force a cut, as happened at many banks in 2008–2009.
Stress tests and capital rules
The largest US banks must show they can withstand a severe recession in the Federal Reserve's annual stress tests. The results set how much capital they need, which shapes how much they can return through dividends and buybacks.
Payout ratio for financials
For banks and insurers, the earnings payout ratio is a reasonable guide. This list keeps only financials paying out 100% of earnings or less.
Frequently asked questions
Do banks pay good dividends?
Many do. Large and regional banks often yield more than the market average, and payouts are tied to their earnings and capital levels.
When do banks raise dividends?
Many large US banks announce dividend increases after the Federal Reserve releases its stress test results, usually in late June.
