Energy dividend stocks

Energy companies range from oil and gas producers, whose profits rise and fall with commodity prices, to pipeline operators that earn steadier, fee-based income. Many pay generous dividends, but producers' payouts can swing with oil and gas prices, and some pay a fixed base dividend plus a variable amount on top.

How this list is built: US-listed stocks in the Energy sector in our data with a yield of 2% to 12% and a share price of at least $5. The payout ratio must be 100% of earnings or less; where the dividend history allows, dividends paid over the last 12 months must be no more than 5% below the 12 months before, and high payers (8% or more) whose share price fell 10% or more over the past year are left out. Highest yield first. Refreshed daily from our dividend data.

Producers vs pipelines

Oil and gas producers' cash flow follows commodity prices, so their dividends can rise sharply in good years and be cut in bad ones. Pipeline and storage companies are usually paid fees for moving volumes, which makes their cash flow, and dividends, more stable.

Base plus variable dividends

Some producers pay a fixed base dividend plus a variable dividend that depends on how much cash they generate. The variable part can change a lot from quarter to quarter, so the yield based on the latest payment can overstate or understate the next year.

Partnerships

Some pipeline businesses are structured as master limited partnerships (MLPs), which pay distributions rather than dividends and send investors a K-1 tax form instead of a 1099.

Frequently asked questions

Are energy dividends safe?

It depends on the business. Pipeline companies with fee-based contracts tend to have steadier dividends; oil and gas producers' dividends can be cut when commodity prices fall.

What is a variable dividend?

An extra payment on top of a fixed base dividend that changes with how much cash the company generates. Several oil and gas producers use this approach.
