Consumer staples dividend stocks
Consumer staples companies make the things people buy in good times and bad: food, drinks, household and personal care products, and tobacco. That steady demand supports dependable dividends, and the sector includes several of the longest dividend-growth streaks in the US market, such as Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola and Colgate-Palmolive.
How this list is built: US-listed stocks in the Consumer Defensive sector in our data with a yield of 1.5% to 12% and a share price of at least $5. The payout ratio must be 100% of earnings or less; where the dividend history allows, dividends paid over the last 12 months must be no more than 5% below the 12 months before, and high payers (8% or more) whose share price fell 10% or more over the past year are left out. Highest yield first. Refreshed daily from our dividend data.

Why staples are dividend favourites
Demand for everyday products barely changes in a recession, so these companies' cash flows are steadier than most. Strong brands also let them raise prices over time, which supports dividend growth.
What to watch
Slow sales growth, rising costs that can't be passed on, and high debt from acquisitions can squeeze dividend growth. Compare dividend growth over several years, not just the yield.
